I was trying to get a nice photo of Princess Poppy Pea, cuddling her favourite cow toy, but she stuck her tongue out at me!

Chicken Diary 28/7/15

One of my Araucanas has made friends with some other chickens on the farm.  Today they went exploring together.

They stopped to admire some pretty flowers.

My Araucana Chickens

My Araucana chickens don't actually live with me because my garden is very small and regularly visited by foxes.  Instead they live with my family on a farm up a hill near me. It's a lovely farm where they have a very large, secure barn, and lots of open space to roam around.

I've been visiting my chickens since they were eggs; I used to talk and sing to them before they hatched.  Originally I had eight eggs and five of them actually hatched.  If you look closely at the photo you can see my Araucana eggs; they are the pale blue ones.

 I held and fed my chicks regularly from birth, so they are very tame and know who I am.

I love my chickens so much.  I am so grateful to my family at the farm who made my dream come true by getting these chickens for me and giving them such a happy life.

My Crow Friends

My best friends are two crows who live near me.  I call them 'Gloom' and 'Gloomette' - the Gloom Crows!

I've been feeding these crows since 2012 and in doing so have earned their trust.  Every day I go to their feeding spot and leave food there for them.  When they see me they fly over and take the food.  It's the most rewarding feeling, that these wild creatures recognise me and know that I'm a friend.

Often, when I am walking up the hill to get to the feeding spot, I can see Gloom on top of a nearby building waiting for me. 

Gloom, the male, is the braver of the two and he comes down to feed when I'm still there. 

Gloomette, the female, is more timid and usually waits until I walk away.

It is such a privilege to have these two crows as my friends and every day I am so happy to see them and they always seem happy to see me too.

Corvids are my spirit animals and I have a particular interest in them, which is why people call me 'Corvid Lady' and hence the name of this blog!
